INCOME AND HOUSING STATISTICS

OBJECTIVES

The Income and Housing Statistics program provides statistical leadership, standards development and information for a broad picture of the economic wellbeing of the Australian population. It provides statistics covering a range of topics including income, expenditure, wealth, housing, homelessness, and superannuation.

The program's statistics are used to support policy development, program delivery and program evaluation of key government agencies involved in social services, taxation, housing, and homelessness.

OUTPUTS


The program produces a range of outputs including frameworks and standards, information development plans, statistical products, information/technical papers, guides and analytical articles. The key publications for the program include:


DEVELOPMENTS

The main medium-term developments in the program are to:
  • publish results from the 2013-14 cycle of Survey of Income and Housing - from August 2015
  • provide support to the 2016 Census of Population and Housing, in particular the development of the Homelessness Enumeration Strategy - due in August 2016
  • update and publish statistical standards relating to income and housing (revisions due to commence mid 2016): publish first Australian wealth standards - from late 2017
  • develop and publish results from the 2015-16 Household Income and Expenditure Survey, including a new fiscal incidence study - from mid-2017
  • develop new survey methodologies for the production of household economic wellbeing data that is more integrated and makes better use of administrative data - ongoing.
